A One-Stop Solution for Converting Audio and Video Files by Vladimir Ravkin - 07 Sep 2007
Ever so often people ask questions about converting audio files from one digital format to another. You can find different solutions to this problem if you search the Internet for a while. This article offers a one-stop solution for converting files from just about any to any audio or video format, which is relatively easy and free. This article, in the first place, is intended to help those audio book listeners who use their local library�s digital download services, which provide files in wma format. For iPod owners, for example, it means that the wma audio files they get must be converted into mp3 format, so that they could use their devices for listening to them. The solution offered here is based on an open source project initially called VideoLAN Client. It includes the VLC Media Player, which supports playback of OGG, MP2, MP3, MP4, DivX, DVD, and a whole bunch of other file types, including FLV. What is most important in the relation to the subject of this article is that this Media Player also converts files from one format to another and writes down the results on the hard drive of your computer. Because of its open source nature, VLC Media Player evolves quickly, with new features and can be downloaded free from the videolan site. VLC Media Player is a must-have application not only for its ability to open and play just about any type of audio or video file you throw at it, but also for its ability to convert the files between different digital formats. The conversion with VLC Media Player is easy. For a specific example, suppose we need to convert wma files into the mp3 format. In this case we need to do the following: 1. Download and install VLC Media Player (see the link below). 2. Start the application, then drag and drop wma files you need to convert into the VLC Media Player window. VLC starts playing the files. Click on the Stop control to stop playing. 3. Go to the File menu and select Wizard. In the Wizard window select the �Transcode/Save to file� option and click Next. VLC opens the Input window. 4. In the Input window, select the �Existing playlist item� option, then highlight one of the files from the appearing playlist and click Next. Unfortunately, you can select files one by one only, the bunch mode is not supported yet, but hopefully it will be implemented soon. 5. In the new Transcode window select the �Trnascode audio� option and select output Codec - in our specific example it is MP3. Click Next. In the Encapsulation format window that appears, just click Next. 6. In the new �Additional transcode options� window type in or browse to the output file name and click Finish. The conversion starts and the result is written into the directory you have just specified. Looks a bit complicated, isn�t it? Actually, it is much easier than it looks - only 6 quick and easy steps. The compensation for this endeavor is that you can convert between many different formats. Please, bear in mind, however, that you cannot play or convert DRM protected wma files using VLC Media player. This procedure works for unprotected wma files only.
