| Another exceptional story, January 7, 2009

They're often predictable, sentimental, and manipulative - and I'm finding that I can't get enough of them. "The Gift", in many ways reminded me of a Dean Koontz story, minus the psycho serial killers. In addition to the usual Evans characters working through a painful past to find healing and true love, you meet a young boy with the ability to work miracles, though at a substantial personal cost. The parallels to the life of Christ are undeniable - and we watch, shocked, as the world tries to possess and exploit Colin and his gift, all the while knowing that this is what our world always does. "The Gift" may not change your life - that's a lot to expect of a novel. But you will come away reminded of how one small life, and individual acts of love, can have a great impact.
